Check this before November 10 if you're on PS5. Confirmed PlayStation's policy says that once you start downloading the main part of a pre-order, including pre-loading, you can't get a refund unless the item is faulty. And downloads happen automatically if you have Automatic Downloads on.
Confirmed GTA 6's PS5 pre-load opens on November 10 at midnight local time. If you're unsure about your purchase, decide before then, or turn automatic downloads off.
Cancelling on PlayStation
Confirmed The rule depends on when you paid:
| You paid | You can cancel |
|---|---|
| More than 14 days before release | Any time before the release date |
| 14 days or less before release | Up to 14 days after payment |
Both only apply if the main download hasn't started. PlayStation charges you the moment you pre-order, and cancellation requests go through its refund process. Immediately accessible extra content stops working if you cancel.
Cancelling on Xbox
Confirmed Microsoft says you can cancel any pre-order online:
- Sign in to your Microsoft account order history.
- Find the pre-order and select Cancel.
- Follow the steps on screen.
If you paid with Microsoft account balance, you're charged immediately. Otherwise Microsoft may charge you up to 10 days before release, which for GTA 6 could be from about November 9. If you cancel after billing but before release, Microsoft processes it as a refund.
Reported Timesaver's guide notes that Microsoft's page doesn't treat pre-loading as a cut-off, which is a difference from PlayStation. After release, expect any refund to be judged case by case.
Cancelling a boxed copy
Confirmed Rockstar says physical pre-orders are handled by the retailer you bought from. For physical copies bought from the Rockstar Store, it points you to Xsolla's cancellation steps.
Once you've redeemed the code, the box behaves very differently from a disc, so ask your retailer before opening it if you're unsure.
What you lose by cancelling
The Vintage Vice City Pack and the free month of GTA+ come with the pre-order, so expect to lose them. If you cancel a PlayStation pre-order, its immediately accessible extras stop working. If you kept a GTA+ membership going, check its renewal separately.
Thinking of switching edition instead?
You don't need to cancel. Confirmed Rockstar sells the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately, so starting with Standard keeps that option open.
What this guide doesn't cover
Local consumer law may give you further rights, and PlayStation's policy says so itself. This isn't legal advice. Having trouble with the download rather than the purchase? See how to fix a pre-load that won't start.
