Confirmed official Rockstar, Take-Two or platform source. Reported a named outlet, not confirmed by Rockstar. Rumour unverified, treat with caution.
If GTA 6 isn't pre-loading, first check it has opened, then check your settings. Confirmed Rockstar says automatic pre-load needs auto-downloads on (PS5) or automatic updates on (Xbox), with the console powered on or in Rest Mode or Sleep mode.
Has it actually opened yet?
Confirmed Nothing will download before these times:
| You have | Pre-load opens |
|---|---|
| PS5 digital | November 10, midnight in your time zone |
| Xbox digital | November 10, 12 a.m. GMT worldwide |
| Boxed copy | Code available from November 12 |
An older Rockstar support page still mentions November 12 for digital. The November 3 newswire and pre-load FAQ give November 10, so those are the ones to follow.
Check these settings on PS5
Confirmed From Rockstar's FAQ and PlayStation's support pages:
- Turn on automatic downloads.
- Keep the console on or in Rest Mode, with Stay Connected to the Internet on.
- In Game Library, select the game, select the timer, and turn on auto-download for it.
- Sign in with the account that bought the game, and check your transaction history shows the purchase.
Before you turn this on: PlayStation's refund rules say a started download, including a pre-load, ends your right to a change-of-mind refund. If you might cancel, sort that out first.
Check these on Xbox
Confirmed Rockstar says to turn on automatic updates and keep the console on or in Sleep mode. Xbox Support's list for downloads that won't start is:
- Check the Xbox status page.
- Sign in with the correct profile.
- Check the space on your drive.
- Check for a system update.
Boxed copy not working?
Your code comes from the box, and it needs redeeming through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store before anything downloads. If you bought from a retailer and something's wrong with the code, Rockstar directs purchase questions to that retailer. How boxed copies work.
Not enough space
Confirmed Rockstar says the pre-load needs up to 212 GB. See how much each console has, or add a PS5 SSD or Xbox card.
Download stuck or slow
Check the time to expect at your speed first, since 212 GB can legitimately take many hours. Busy servers are also likely when pre-load first opens, so waiting a few hours can help. Our full pre-load guide has the basic steps.
Still stuck?
Purchases from console stores are supported by PlayStation or Xbox, not Rockstar. Both pages are linked in the sources below. On launch night, also see what we know about patches and servers.
