Confirmed Digital pre-load for GTA 6 opens November 10, and the download is up to 212 GB. Here is how to get it done before launch, even if you're away from your console.

Update, 4 November 2026: we've added the settings Rockstar says automatic pre-load needs, and a warning about PS5 refunds. Earlier versions of this guide left both out.

Before you start

Pre-load on PS5

Confirmed Pre-load starts at midnight in your local time zone on November 10. For it to happen automatically, Rockstar says you need auto-downloads enabled, with the console on or in Rest Mode.

  1. Open GTA VI in your Game Library, under Purchased.
  2. Choose Download.
  3. Put the console in rest mode with its internet connection left on, so the download keeps going.

From your phone: PlayStation's official support pages say the console must be signed in to the same account, have Stay Connected to the Internet switched on, and be in rest mode. Then:

  1. In PlayStation App, choose Settings, then Pair Console to App.
  2. Go to Game Library, then Purchased, and pick the game.
  3. Tap Download. You get a notification when it finishes.

The same app shows your storage under Settings, then Storage, and lets you delete games if you are short on room.

Pre-load on Xbox Series X|S

Confirmed Pre-load starts at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, which is 7 p.m. ET on November 9. For it to happen automatically, Rockstar says you need automatic updates enabled, with the console on or in Sleep mode.

  1. Open the game from My Games & Apps, or find it in the Store.
  2. Choose Install.
  3. Set the power mode to Sleep so downloads keep running. Menu names can differ slightly between system versions.

From your phone: sign in to the Xbox app with the same account, find the game, and choose to install it to your console. Third-party guides say Sleep mode is the most dependable setting for this, and remote features need to be enabled on the console.

Using a boxed code

Redeem the code in the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, then follow the steps above. Once redeemed, it is tied to your account. Here is what that means for resale.

If the download will not start

Our troubleshooting guide has the full list. The quick checks:

  • Check the date and time against your region. PS5 pre-load follows local midnight.
  • Check free space, not just total capacity.
  • Check you're signed in with the account that bought the game.
  • Expect busy servers at first. Kotaku warns console servers could struggle when large numbers of people download at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pre-load GTA 6 from my phone?

PlayStation's app supports remote downloads when the console is online and in rest mode. The Xbox app can also send an install to your console, which works most reliably in Sleep power mode.

Do I need to own the game before pre-loading?

Yes. You need a digital pre-order, or a redeemed code from a boxed copy.
