In early October, Rockstar replaced the long-standing "Rating Pending" badge on its GTA 6 site with a finished certificate. The game is rated M for Mature (17+) by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 18 in the UK and Europe. The PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings match.
The Seven ESRB Content Descriptors
- Blood and Gore
- Intense Violence
- Mature Humor
- Nudity
- Strong Language
- Strong Sexual Content
- Use of Drugs and Alcohol
These are the same seven descriptors GTA V carries on modern platforms, so nothing here suggests a step change in content. The launch trailer's shower scene between Jason and Lucia, and the strip club seen in the Extended Look, fall under the nudity and sexual content labels. Store listings in Australia and New Zealand also mention sex scenes.
"In-Game Purchases": Does GTA 6 Have Microtransactions?
The ESRB listing carries an In-Game Purchases interactive element. That has surprised people, because Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told preview press the single-player game has no real-money purchases at launch.
The two are not necessarily in conflict. The ESRB label covers any in-game offer of digital goods, including paid add-ons, expansions and edition upgrades, not only microtransactions. It is also attached to the product, so it can anticipate later content such as an online mode. What we know for sure is narrower: Rockstar has said there are no microtransactions in single-player at launch, and has declined to discuss monetisation of any future online mode. Full context here.
For Parents
GTA 6 is an adult game, in line with every mainline GTA. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have system-level parental controls that can block M or 18-rated titles and restrict purchases. The ESRB listing has no "Users Interact" label, consistent with a single-player launch.
