Confirmed official Rockstar, Take-Two or platform source. Reported a named outlet, not confirmed by Rockstar. Rumour unverified, treat with caution.
Confirmed Rockstar lists GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. So any file offering GTA 6 for a Windows PC or an Android phone isn't the real game, however convincing the page looks.
Launch hype makes this the peak time for these traps, so here's how to spot them.
Where GTA 6 is really sold
Confirmed Rockstar names the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and Rockstar Store, plus select retailers and third-party storefronts where the game is available. On console, the game always arrives through your console's own store, even when you buy a boxed code.
The scams to watch for
Reported Gizmodo described these patterns in June:
- Fake beta or early access sites, spread through Discord, YouTube and gaming forums
- Windows .exe installers and Android APK files posing as the official client
- Phishing sites imitating Rockstar or game stores
- Instructions to disable your antivirus, so the download can run
The same report lists what these files can do: open backdoors, steal saved passwords and game or banking logins, run cryptominers on your graphics card, and on Android, intercept text messages to get past two-factor authentication. That article sits alongside promotion for a VPN company's product, so judge the sales pitch separately from the warning.
Red flags
- It offers GTA 6 on PC, phone, PS4 or Xbox One. Here's the real platform list.
- It asks you to "verify" by logging in or completing a survey.
- It wants payment in crypto or gift cards.
- It tells you to turn off security software.
- The price is far below the real regional price.
- It claims to be a leaked build. Beyond the legal problem, a file from an anonymous source can contain anything. We don't link to these, and you shouldn't run them.
PC players
The wait is real, and scammers count on it. Confirmed Rockstar has announced no PC version. Here's what's reported about timing, and our PC tracker only changes when something official does. No system-requirements checker or PC installer you find is genuine.
If you already clicked
- Disconnect the device from the internet.
- Run a full scan with up-to-date security software.
- From a different, clean device, change passwords for email, banking, gaming and anything saved in your browser.
- Turn on two-factor authentication using an authenticator app rather than SMS, especially if you installed an Android file.
- If you paid or shared card details, contact your bank straight away.
If you paid a real store for a real pre-order and changed your mind, that's different: here's how to cancel.
