Confirmed official Rockstar, Take-Two or platform source. Reported a named outlet, not confirmed by Rockstar. Rumour unverified, treat with caution.

Not at launch, according to Rockstar. Reported Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, was asked on the Kinda Funny Gamecast whether players can spend real money on things in the game, and tbreak reports his answer as "No monetization." But the store listings add a wrinkle.

What Rockstar has said

Reported The comment was reported in August. As tbreak points out, it applies to launch. It doesn't promise anything about what comes later. GTA Online has made a great deal of money from Shark Cards, and no online mode for GTA 6 has been announced.

What the store labels say

Confirmed The PlayStation Store lists "In-game purchases optional". Our ratings post also covers the ESRB's In-Game Purchases notice.

How can both be true?

We don't have an official explanation, so here's what's known:

  • Confirmed Rockstar sells the Ultimate Edition Upgrade as a digital add-on through the console stores. Here's what it adds.
  • The label could cover something like that, since it's bought separately from the base game.
  • It could also anticipate later content.

That second part is our reading rather than anything Rockstar has said.

What you might pay for today

Item Cost Required?
Standard Edition Varies by country Yes
Ultimate Edition Upgrade Paid add-on No
GTA+ One month free with digital pre-orders, then paid if you keep it No

GTA+'s free month is reported to auto-renew, so check that if you don't want to keep it.

For parents

If you're worried about spending, use your console's family settings to control purchases, whatever the game's model turns out to be. Our rating guide has more on the game's M and PEGI 18 ratings.

What's unknown

  • Whether single-player content will be added

Rockstar told IGN other things about the game as well. We'll update this if its position changes.
