Confirmed official Rockstar, Take-Two or platform source. Reported a named outlet, not confirmed by Rockstar. Rumour unverified, treat with caution.

GTA Online isn't going anywhere yet, as far as anyone has announced. Reported In February, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick answered an investor's question by saying he had "every reason to believe" the company will keep supporting it, Insider Gaming reports.

What Take-Two has said

Reported Zelnick credited an engaged community and new content that keeps people coming back. That's a statement of expectation, tied to how the business is doing, and it's not a guarantee of any particular period. Our report on the September shareholder meeting covers what followed, and the November 9 earnings call may add to it.

Why it matters that GTA 6 has no online mode at launch

Confirmed GTA 6's store listing describes a single-player game. So for now, GTA Online remains Rockstar's online GTA. Here's what's known about GTA 6 and online.

What about transfers?

Nothing has been announced. That covers characters, money, vehicles and properties. Some writers expect a fresh start and others guess at perks, but it's all speculation.

What should you do with your GTA$?

We can't tell you how this will play out, so we'd treat your GTA Online money as something to enjoy in GTA Online:

  • Don't buy Shark Cards on the theory they'll transfer.
  • Don't hoard GTA$ for GTA 6 either.
  • Keep playing if you enjoy it, since nothing has been announced to stop you.

What about GTA+?

Reported ComicBook.com reported in 2025 that Rockstar had made GTA Online available through a GTA+ membership, without owning GTA 5 separately. A free month comes with digital pre-orders of GTA 6, so that's a cheap way to look around. Check what it renews at before keeping it.

Can you play GTA 5 and GTA 6 side by side?

Yes, they're separate games, storage permitting. GTA 6 alone needs up to 212 GB, so you may need to add space or remove something. Moving between platforms is covered in our crossplay post.

What to watch

Any Rockstar or Take-Two statement on an end date, transfers or GTA 6 Online. We'll update this post when one comes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GTA Online shutting down when GTA 6 comes out?

No shutdown has been announced. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said he has every reason to believe it will keep supporting GTA Online.

Will my GTA Online money and cars transfer to GTA 6?

Nothing has been announced. Don't assume anything will carry over.

Can I still play GTA 5 after GTA 6 launches?

Yes, nothing announced changes that. GTA 6 is a separate game.
