Will GTA 6 Have Online at Launch? What Rockstar Has and Hasn't Said

If you're planning to jump straight into a new online world on November 19, set expectations now. Rockstar hasn't announced an online mode for GTA 6, let alone a date.

What's on record

• Confirmed The PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as 1 player and the Xbox Store as single player.
• Reported PC Gamer reports GTA 6 being described as a "singleplayer experience" for launch.
• Reported Bloomberg reported in December 2024 that a significant online mode was planned, built to earn revenue for years. Insider Gaming summarises that report, and notes Rockstar hasn't officially announced it.
• Reported OpenCritic and others report that GTA Online will keep going after GTA 6 launches.

When will GTA 6 Online launch?

Rumour Nobody with authority has said. Dates in circulation range from within a month of launch to some time in 2027. Remember that GTA Online itself arrived about two weeks after GTA 5 in 2013, though that's history rather than evidence.

The closest thing to a public hint is Twitch's CEO mentioning multiplayer "next year", which isn't a Rockstar announcement. Be wary of any site that gives you a specific date.

Will your GTA 5 Online progress transfer?

Rumour Rockstar hasn't said anything about transfers. Some writers expect a fresh start, others think characters or perks might come across. All of it's speculation, so don't spend or save GTA$ on the assumption of a transfer.

What about GTA+?

Reported GamesRadar reports Rockstar now allows anyone with a GTA+ membership to play GTA Online on current-generation consoles. Whether that says anything about GTA 6's future online mode is an open question.

A free month of GTA+ comes with digital pre-orders of GTA 6, and it applies to GTA+'s existing benefits.

Do you need PS Plus or Game Pass Core for GTA 6?

Confirmed PlayStation's listing has offline play enabled, and subscriptions like PS Plus typically matter for online play, of which none has been announced. Rockstar hasn't published full details, so check your console's store listing before relying on this.
